Family style, because a wedding is a family argument about food
Italian is the wedding menu that survives having opinions in the room. Large platters passed at the table give people agency over their own plate, which defuses most of what goes wrong at a wedding dinner — the guest who wanted more, the child who wanted less, the relative with a view about portion sizes.
It also reads as abundance rather than restraint. Trays of lasagna, penne alfredo and spaghetti bolognese going down the middle of a long table say something different from a single composed plate arriving in front of each chair, and for a lot of couples that difference is the whole point.
Every protein is zabiha-sourced, including the halal beef pepperoni on the pizza — which is beef, not pork, and is usually the item that quietly disappears from an Italian wedding menu elsewhere.
- Lasagna, penne alfredo and spaghetti bolognese — passed, not plated
- Chicken parmesan and Italian meatballs as the substantial centre
- Antipasto, bruschetta, caprese and garlic bread through the arrival hour
- Tiramisu and cannoli, or coconut panna cotta where dairy is a concern
Baked pasta is the only main that survives a wedding schedule
Weddings never run to time. The ceremony overruns, the photographs take longer than anyone planned, and the meal that was supposed to start at six starts at seven.
A plated main punished by forty minutes in a warmer is a different dish by the time it is eaten. Baked pasta is not — lasagna is as good in its second hour as its first, which is why we lean Italian for weddings at venues with no kitchen, long photograph lists, or a ceremony likely to run over. It is the menu that forgives the day.
The cake and the dessert course
Italian is the one cuisine here whose dessert genuinely competes with a wedding cake, so decide rather than default. Tiramisu and cannoli as a served course works when the cake is small and ceremonial; when the cake is the dessert, take extra antipasto for the arrival hour instead and let the cake do its job.
