Catering Soul Food, honestly

Soul food is the cuisine of care — long-cooked greens, cornbread from a skillet, fried chicken that crackles when you break the crust, and mac and cheese that demands a second helping before you've finished the first. At Carthage we build our Southern table around the dishes that define the tradition, sourcing every protein — fried chicken, Nashville hot sandwiches, slow-smoked ribs, smothered chops, and blackened catfish — from halal, zabiha-sourced suppliers. It's honest food, cooked from scratch in one Los Angeles kitchen: collard greens braised low and slow, candied yams with the right edge of sweetness, hush puppies golden and hot, fried green tomatoes with that tangy crunch, and skillet cornbread that doubles as a plate for whatever's left on it.

The beauty of a single-kitchen operation is that soul food can share billing with any other cuisine in our catalog — Korean fried chicken, Lebanese grilled meats, Salvadoran pupusas — and everything prices together on one per-guest figure. Dietary tags are straightforward: collard greens, candied yams, and fried green tomatoes are naturally vegetarian or can be made vegan; the smoked and fried proteins anchor the table for meat eaters. Banana pudding and peach cobbler close the meal the way a Southern Sunday supper demands. From a backyard celebration in the Valley to a formal reception in Orange County, this is comfort food scaled for the occasion without losing the soul.

Soul Food catering runs about $26$101 per guest for food. Multiplied out, that is what a spread costs at the counts people usually ask about.

Estimated soul food catering cost by guest count — food only
GuestsEstimated food costPer guest
25$650 – $2,525$26 – $101
50$1,300 – $5,050$26 – $101
100$2,600 – $10,100$26 – $101
150$3,900 – $15,150$26 – $101

Food only. Staffing, rentals, delivery, setup and breakdown are separate lines, and a mandatory service charge and California sales tax apply on top — so the invoice for a staffed event runs meaningfully above the food figure. Smaller counts sit at the top of the band: setup and delivery cost the same at 25 guests as at 100. Every menu halal · zabiha-sourced.

Questions

Soul Food catering, answered honestly

What does soul food catering cost in Los Angeles?
Platters, trays and pans run $58–$220. A spread of fried chicken, two or three sides and cornbread prices in the lower half; smoked ribs and whole-tray builds for a large room sit at the top. Every pan states how many it serves.
Is soul food halal here? Southern cooking usually is not.
It is, and the substitutions are the point. Southern cooking runs on pork — bacon in the greens, ham hocks in the beans — and ours does not. Collards are built on smoked turkey, the fried chicken and ribs are zabiha, and nothing is cooked with alcohol. Nobody at the table is eating a lesser version.
Does soul food travel well for drop-off?
Most of it is built for exactly that. Mac and cheese, collards, candied yams and cornbread hold beautifully and are better for a short rest; fried chicken goes out last and travels vented so it stays crisp. Ribs and catfish come staffed when you want them served hot off the line.
Which soul food dishes should anchor our menu?
Southern fried chicken anchors nearly every table, with slow-smoked ribs beside it where the budget allows. Baked mac and cheese, collard greens and candied yams are the three sides people notice are missing, skillet cornbread carries the middle, and peach cobbler or banana pudding closes it.
